Research is arguably unique among pursuits in terms of the freedom it provides for exploration and the opportunity for having lasting impact. However, research, by definition, tends to be nebulous in its goals and uncertain in its trajectory. How then does one navigate the research world without getting lost? There is, of course, no “right” answer --- after all, it is research --- but I will share some perspectives based on my experience --- both hits and misses --- and that of others around. I will draw from the domain of computer science, both AI-related and otherwise, and distill recipes that seem to have broad applicability --- envisioning a future that doesn’t yet exist, anticipating technology shifts, staying persistent to create luck, and most importantly, having the confidence to think independently and not get overawed by the “wisdom” of crowds!
